Safeguarding is the action schools take to protect children from harm, promote their welfare, reduce risk and create safe, inclusive environments where students feel secure, supported, listened to and able to learn, develop and thrive.
Child protection is the part of safeguarding focused on identifying, recording, reporting and responding to concerns about children who are suffering, or are likely to suffer, abuse, neglect or other forms of significant harm.
Safer recruitment is the process schools use to attract, check, appoint and monitor suitable adults to work with children, helping reduce the risk of harm through robust vetting, professional curiosity, and safer employment practice.
Abuse is any action, behaviour, or failure to act that causes harm to a child. It may be physical, emotional or sexual, or take the form of neglect, exploitation, coercion, intimidation or online abuse.
Early help is support offered as soon as concerns emerge, enabling schools and families to respond before difficulties escalate. It focuses on identifying need early, coordinating support and improving outcomes for children, young people and families.
Duty of care is the legal, ethical and professional responsibility of adults and organisations to take reasonable steps to protect children from foreseeable harm, act in their best interests and provide safe, appropriate support and supervision.
Positive handling is the safe, reasonable and proportionate use of physical intervention to prevent harm, protect a child or others, or maintain safety. It should always be used as a last resort and within clear policy.
School leaders are responsible for creating a strong safeguarding culture, ensuring safer systems, training staff, monitoring practice, maintaining compliance, responding appropriately to concerns and making sure children’s safety remains a visible strategic priority.
