What is Parent Advocacy?

For Schools:
If you have a parent that is struggling to understand the diverse needs of their child, then please let them know that we are here and that we can help them on their journey.

For Parents:

As a parent, the inclusion journey can be simple and you may breeze the whole process. For many of us the process is full of complications.

When we become parents we don’t expect to need to deal with learning differences or challenges. We must therefore learn from those who walked before us.

However, this can be difficult.

Acronyms whizz by……IEP, ISA, LSA, TA, EP, OT, SALT…..and parents may feel silly, uninformed or ill prepared if we have to stop every meeting to ask for explanation.

Words we have never heard are thrown at us. Services are offered and it can be very daunting.

So many questions are raised by parents:

What is a realistic expectation for my child?
What is a realistic expectation from the school?
Why are there so many assessments?
Why do I need occupational therapy when you previously wanted speech and language therapy?
What are my, or my child's, rights?
Which school would be best for my child?
Can someone help with school meetings?
Do I really need an assessment?
How do I know who is giving me good advice?
What should we focus on first?
and many more questions after this.

Sometimes it would be nice to have an experienced, qualified and impartial person with us to help navigate the systems.

Someone who has been a parent, an educator, a qualified school leader and has in depth knowledge of education in the UAE.
